Vocal pair lay out rug (6)
I believe the answer is:
toupee
'rug' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'vocal pair lay out' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
an anagram of 'out' is 'tou' which is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'pee' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).
(Other definitions for toupee that I've seen before include "A man's hairpiece in America" , "An American wig or hair-piece" , "21 Antrim promontory" , "A wig for American male" , "rug" .)
