Crossword Genius

Volcano with more precipitation (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

rainier

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'volcano' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'more precipitation' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'precipitation' could be 'rain' (rain is a kind of precipitation) and 'rain' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'ier' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'with' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for rainier that I've seen before include "This is more likely to pour down" , "more cats and dogs?" , "Mountain" , "Prince of Monaco, married to Grace Kelly, d. 2005" , "more drops?" .)

I've seen this clue in The Daily Express.
