Waits with supports (6,2)
I believe the answer is:
stands by
'waits' is the definition.
(standing by is a kind of waiting)
'supports' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'supports' could be 'stands' (stand is a kind of support) and 'stands' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'by' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
'with' is the link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for stands by that I've seen before include "gives support" , "Is supportive" , "Is available" , "Holds oneself in readiness" , "fails to intervene" .)
