Was out to get the bandage (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

swathe

'bandage' is the definition.
(I know that swathe is a type of bandage)

'was out to get the' is the wordplay.
'out' indicates an anagram (out can mean wrong or inaccurate).
'to get' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other).
'was' anagrammed gives 'swa'.
'swa'+'the'='SWATHE'

(Other definitions for swathe that I've seen before include "Broad strip or area of something" , "Wrap; a cut strip" , "Wrap in bandages - broad mown band" , "Wrap in layers of, say, bandages" , "Wrap in layers of warm garments or bandages" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Independent.
