Crossword Genius

Way through area on Java? (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

aisle

'way' is the definition.
(aisle is a kind of way)

'area on java?' is the wordplay.
'area' becomes 'a' (maths abbreviation).
'on' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'java?' becomes 'isle' (Java is an example of an island).
'a'+'isle'='AISLE'

'through' is the link.

(Other definitions for aisle that I've seen before include "Passage between pews" , "Here comes the bride" , "Part of a church" , "Church walkway" , "Division of the nave in church" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
