Crossword Genius

Wealth perhaps, good and ancient (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

gold

'wealth' is the definition.
(gold can mean wealth or riches)

'good and ancient' is the wordplay.
'good' becomes 'g' (abbreviation).
'and' says to put letters next to each other.
'ancient' becomes 'old' (similar in meaning).
'g'+'old'='GOLD'

'perhaps' is the link.

(Other definitions for gold that I've seen before include "Element (Au)" , "One of the Magi's gifts" , "Woman after a man's money" , "Mine produces this" , "bull's-eye" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
