Weapon for spraying tear gas around the riot (7)
I believe the answer is:
machete
'weapon' is the definition.
(machete is a kind of weapon)
'gas around the riot' is the wordplay.
'gas' becomes 'mace' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'around' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'riot' indicates an anagram.
'the' with letters rearranged gives 'het'.
'mace' enclosing 'het' is 'MACHETE'.
'for spraying tear' is the link.
I am not very happy about this link. Some or all of it may be part of another bit of the clue.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for machete that I've seen before include "Knife for hacking" , "Cheat me over broad heavy knife used in jungle" , "The mace (anag.)" , "Heavy South American knife" , "Broad heavy knife common in Central America" .)
