Crossword Genius

Wearing one item of clothing, buy some stocks perhaps (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

invest

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'buy some stocks perhaps' is the definition.
I can't tell whether this defines the answer.

'wearing one item of clothing' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'wearing' could be 'in' (you are 'in' the clothes you're wearing) and 'in' is found in the answer.
'clothing' could be 'vest' (vest is a kind of clothing) and 'vest' is found within the answer.
No letters remain.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for invest that I've seen before include "Put money into business for profit" , "Put money into in hopes of a return" , "sink" , "Formally place in office" , "speculate?" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
