Well-educated head of languages was paid (7)
I believe the answer is:
learned
'well-educated' is the definition.
(I know that well-educated can be written as learned)
'head of languages was paid' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'head' could be 'ear' (I have seen 'Head of corn' mean 'ear' so perhaps 'head' could also mean 'ear') and 'ear' is found in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for learned that I've seen before include "Full of knowledge" , "Erudite - academic" , "Found out; educated" , "Erudite, knowledgeable" , "Having great knowledge" .)
