Crossword Genius

Welshman's raised floor (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

dais

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This might be a double definition.

'welshman's' is the first definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot see how one could define the other.

'raised floor' is the second definition.
(I've seen this before)

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for dais that I've seen before include "Said (anag.)" , "Throne platform" , "Platform, rostrum" , "Said to be a low platform" , "Speaker's raised platform" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
