Crossword Genius

Went on board ship following European doctor and Edward (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

embarked

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'went on board' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'ship following european doctor and edward' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'ship' could be 'bark' (I've seen this before) and 'bark' is present in the answer.
'european' could be 'e' (abbreviation e.g. EU) and 'e' is found within the answer.
'doctor' could be 'me' and 'me' is found within the remaining letters.
A single letter 'd' remains which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for embarked that I've seen before include "Began (on project)" , "Went on board ship or plane" , "Having set sail" , "Set out on a voyage" , "Got on" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
