Crossword Genius

Went out on the town with the famous (10)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

celebrated

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'the famous' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'went out on the town' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'on' could be 'at' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'at' is located in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'with' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for celebrated that I've seen before include "Publicly honoured" , "Cheered" , "Notable" , "Observed (festival); famous" , "Rejoiced - famous" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
