Crossword Genius

Went up and roughly cased all round, you conclude (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

ascended

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'went up' is the definition.
('ascend' can be a synonym of 'go up')

'roughly cased all round you conclude' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'roughly' could be 'c' (circa) and 'c' is found in the answer.
'conclude' could be 'end' (I've seen this before) and 'end' is found within the answer.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

'and' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for ascended that I've seen before include "Climbed, went up" , "R [ROSE]" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
