Went up in the air when the pupil erased the tape (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

leapt

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'went' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both to do with motion as well as being past participle verbs.
Maybe they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'up in the air when the pupil erased the tape' is the wordplay.
'up in the air' is an anagram indicator.
'when' becomes 'e' (I've seen this in other clues).
'the pupil' becomes 'l'.
'erased the tape' becomes 'apt' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'e'+'l'='el'
'el' with letters rearranged gives 'le'.
'le'+'apt'='LEAPT'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for leapt that I've seen before include "rose fast" , "Jumped on plate" , "Bounded, sprang" , "moved up quickly" , "Jumped a long way" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
