Crossword Genius

Wet weather in driving area for learner (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

trainee

'for learner' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'wet weather in driving area' is the wordplay.
'wet weather' becomes 'rain' (rain is wet weather).
'in' is an insertion indicator.
'driving area' becomes 'tee' (a golfer drives a golf ball from a tee).
'rain' placed within 'tee' is 'TRAINEE'.

(Other definitions for trainee that I've seen before include "New recruit" , "A beginner in Aintree" , "As pupil" , "encountered bad weather in driving area" , "One taking instruction" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
