What a writer might have on his bed? (5,2,5)
I believe the answer is:
sheet of paper
'writer might have on his bed?' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how one could define the other.
'what a' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'a' could be 'per' (eg 'one a day' means 'one per day') and 'per' is present in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
