What soldiers eat in combat? (7)

I believe the answer is:
warfare
'combat?' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'what soldiers eat' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'soldiers' could be 're' (Royal Engineers) and 're' is found in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).
'in' acts as a link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for warfare that I've seen before include "Campaigning" , "action" , "All-out fighting" , "Scraps, too, by the look of it" , "Strife" .)
