Crossword Genius

When with the Queen, doing wrong in wearing (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

eroding

'wearing' is the definition.
(I know that wearing can be written as eroding)

'when with the queen doing wrong' is the wordplay.
'when' becomes 'e' (I've seen this in other clues).
'with' indicates putting letters inside.
'the queen' becomes 'r' (abbreviation for regina, e.g. in ER ).
'wrong' is an anagram indicator.
'doing' anagrammed gives 'oding'.
'r' going inside 'oding' is 'roding'.
'e'+'roding'='ERODING'

'in' is the link.

(Other definitions for eroding that I've seen before include "eating away" , "chipping away" , "Gradually wearing away, rock say" , "Wearing away with time" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
