I believe the answer is:

carport

'where a' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't understand how one could define the other.

'vehicle may be left?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'vehicle' could be 'car' (car is a kind of vehicle) and 'car' is found within the answer.
'left?' could be 'port' (left side of a ship - opposite of starboard) and 'port' is present in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

(Other definitions for carport that I've seen before include "Space in lieu of garage" , "off-road parking" , "vehicle cover" , "Vehicle shelter" , "makeshift garage" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
