Where bars are not sweet music (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

prison

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This clue could be a double definition.

'where bars' is the first definition.
The definition and answer can be both man-made objects as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe there's an association between them I don't understand?

'not sweet music' is the second definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot understand how one could define the other.

'are' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for prison that I've seen before include "Jail" , "Place of incarceration" , "porridge" , "cage" , "Clink - jug" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Independent.
