Crossword Genius

Where, in hope, we pray (3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

pew

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'where' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't see how one could define the other.

'in hope we pray' is the wordplay.
'in' says the answer is hidden in the clue.
'PEW' is hidden in the letters of 'hope we pray'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for pew that I've seen before include "Long church seat" , "Bench-like seat in a church" , "Where some of the flock rest" , "Long bench in a church" , "Part of flock sitting here" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
