Crossword Genius

Where kids learn of clans in hot exchanges (6,6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

infant school

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'where kids learn' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot understand how one could define the other.

'of clans in hot exchanges' is the wordplay.
'exchanges' is an anagram indicator (I've seen 'exchanged' mean this).
'of'+'clans'+'in'+'hot'='ofclansinhot'
'ofclansinhot' anagrammed gives 'INFANT SCHOOL'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for infant school that I've seen is " Place where youngsters learn something".)

I've seen this clue in The Times and The Sunday Times.
