I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'where our dumb friends' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how one could define the other.

'dance for the customers?' is the wordplay.
'dance' becomes 'hop' (hop is a kind of dance).
'for' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other) (I've seen this in other clues).
'the customers?' becomes 'pets' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'hop' put after 'pets' is 'PET SHOP'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for pet shop that I've seen before include "Boys in group" , "Where to buy hamsters - boys!" , "Source of leads" , "Scene of boys and cat food" , "musical boys" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
