Crossword Genius

Will stir things up using magic at centre and maybe, spin briefly around (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

agitator

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'will stir' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot see how one could define the other.

'things up using magic at centre and maybe spin briefly around' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'things' could be 'tat' (I have seen 'Tawdry things ' mean 'tat' so perhaps 'things' could also mean 'tat') and 'tat' is found within the answer.
'maybe' could be 'i' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'i' is located in the answer.
'around' could be 'o' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'o' is found in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

(Other definitions for agitator that I've seen before include "Political troublemaker" , "Person stirring up public feeling" , "Disturber of the peace" , "Agent provocateur" , "He stirs things up, causes trouble" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Times.
