Winger not to be trusted, by the sound of it (8)
I believe the answer is:
lyrebird
'sound of it' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot see how one could define the other.
'winger not to be trusted' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'winger' could be 'bird' and 'bird' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'lyre' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).
'by the' is the link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for lyrebird that I've seen before include "Australian pheasant" , "Australian native" , "Australian long-tailed avian" , "mimic" , "Very long-tailed flier" .)
