Crossword Genius

With a good end, but not a good ending? (4-11)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

well-intentioned

'with a good end but not a good ending?' is the definition.
I can't judge whether this defines the answer.

'a good end but not a good ending?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'a' could be 'one' and 'one' is found within the answer.
'good' could be 'well' (synonyms) and 'well' is present in the answer.
'end' could be 'intent' (intent is a kind of end) and 'intent' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'id' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

(Another definition for well-intentioned that I've seen is " having good thoughts".)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
