Withdraw from an arrangement and sob in the wings (3,3)
I believe the answer is:
cry off
'withdraw' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'from an arrangement and sob in the wings' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'from' could be 'off' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'off' is located in the answer.
'sob' could be 'cry' (I've seen this in another clue) and 'cry' is present in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for cry off that I've seen before include "Drop out or withdraw - in tears?" , "Scratch" , "Back out (from an agreement)" , "Withdraw from engagement - in tears" , "Fail to keep an arrangement" .)
