Crossword Genius

Won back Reading East, unexpectedly (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

regained

'won back' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'reading east unexpectedly' is the wordplay.
'east' becomes 'e' ('E' can be a synonym of 'east').
'unexpectedly' indicates an anagram.
'reading'+'e'='readinge'
'readinge' with letters rearranged gives 'REGAINED'.

(Another definition for regained that I've seen is " Got back".)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
