Wood spirit supposedly drunk in ancient times (5)
I believe the answer is:
satyr
'wood spirit' is the definition.
'satyr' can be an answer for 'spirit' (type of woodland spirit in Greek myth). I am not certain of the 'wood' bit.
I don't understand how the rest of the clue works.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for satyr that I've seen before include "Woodland god - sexual predator" , "Woodland god, half man and half goat" , "Classical deity" , "Chased nymphs in the wood" , "Goat-like woodland deity of Greek mythology" .)
