Crossword Genius

Wooden panelling in old wagons by country dwelling (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

wainscot

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'wooden panelling' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'wagons by country dwelling' is the wordplay.
'wagons' becomes 'wains' (wain is a kind of wagon).
'by country dwelling' becomes 'cot' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'wains'+'cot'='WAINSCOT'

'in old' is the link.
I am not very happy about this link. Some or all of it may belong to another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for wainscot that I've seen before include "Panelling on lower part of interior walls" , "I go up the wall" , "Wooden room lining/panelling" , "Wooden wall lining" , "Lining of a wood-panelled wall" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
