I believe the answer is:

This clue could be a double definition.
'woodland space' is the first definition.
'clearing' can be an answer for 'space' (I have seen 'open space' mean 'clearing' so perhaps 'space' could also mean 'clearing'). I'm unsure of the 'woodland' bit.
'becoming brighter' is the second definition.
