Crossword Genius

Wool gatherer? (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

sheepdog

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This could be a double definition.

'wool' is the first definition.
The answer and definition can be both animals as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps you can see an association between them that I don't see?

'gatherer?' is the second definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot understand how one could define the other.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for sheepdog that I've seen before include "Collie, perhaps" , "Shaggy-haired canine" , "Collie, for example" , "Farmer's herding helper" , "Working farm animal" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
