Crossword Genius

Works a way into hotels (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

innards

'works' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'a way into hotels' is the wordplay.
'way' becomes 'rd' (short for road).
'into' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'hotels' becomes 'inns' (inn is a kind of hotel).
'a'+'rd'='ard'
'ard' placed within 'inns' is 'INNARDS'.

(Other definitions for innards that I've seen before include "Guts of mechanism" , "Internal organs" , "Works" , "Most of haggis" , "Informally, the stomach and entrails" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
