'of the french' becomes 'du' ('of the' in French).
'dead' becomes 'late' (similar in meaning).
'a'+'du'+'late'='ADULATE'

(Other definitions for adulate that I've seen before include "Rave over" , "Praise excessively" , "Excessively admire" , "Flatter obsequiously" , "Flatter excessively" .)
