I believe the answer is:

orwell

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'writer' is the definition.
(writer George Orwell)

'runs from ipswich to felixstowe' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'runs' could be 'r' (cricket abbreviation) and 'r' is found within the answer.
'from' could be 'o' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'o' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'well' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'that' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for orwell that I've seen before include "George --, English author" , "Socialist author" , "who wrote novels?" , "River" , "George --, novelist" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
