Crossword Genius

Writer turning to Baba from Kathmandu (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

nepali

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'kathmandu' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot see how one could define the other.

'writer turning to baba' is the wordplay.
'writer' becomes 'pen' (something which writes).
'turning' is a reversal indicator.
'to baba' becomes 'ali' (I've seen this in another clue).
'pen' written backwards gives 'nep'.
'nep'+'ali'='NEPALI'

'from' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for nepali that I've seen before include "Language of Kathmandu" , "Foreigner" , "Native of one Himalayan state" , "Kathmandu native" , "one found in mountainous region" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
