Writers making a fortune around Mile End (5)

I believe the answer is:
poets
'writers' is the definition.
(poet is a kind of writer)
'a fortune around mile end' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'around' could be 'o' (a round letter) and 'o' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'pets' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).
'making' acts as a link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for poets that I've seen before include "Estop (anag.)" , "Verse writers" , "Burns" , "bridges, for example (but extra capital is needed)" , "Heaney and Muldoon" .)
