'lose it' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both to do with human feelings as well as being verbs in their base form.
Perhaps there's a link between them I don't understand?

I can't explain the remainder of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for interest that I've seen before include "Sum paid on a loan" , "Curiosity or concern, or a financial stake in (8)" , "Return" , "Fixed charge for borrowing money" , "Gain - attention" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail, The Telegraph, The Guardian and The Irish News.
