Crossword Genius

Young actress, perhaps, but it's usually a fellow (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

sean

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'young actress' is the definition.
Both the definition and answer are singular nouns.
Perhaps they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'but it's usually a fellow' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'a' could be 'an' and 'an' is found within the answer.
'it' could be 'e' ('e' can mean 'electronic' which is similar to 'IT') and 'e' is located in the answer.
A single letter 's' remains which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'perhaps' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for sean that I've seen before include "Irish form of John" , "Penn, Bean or O'Casey" , "guy at Number 10 [IRISHMAN]" , "- - Connery (007)" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
