Ross

I believe the answer is:

urchin

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'young rogue' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both people as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps you can see a link between them that I can't see?

'backing game with companion taking part' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'companion' could be 'ch' (Companion of Honour) and 'ch' is found in the answer.
'part' could be 'in' (synonyms) and 'in' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'ur' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for urchin that I've seen before include "Monkey" , "Ragged child or sea creature with round shell" , "Scruffy little kid" , "Waif" , "Capital of Kenya" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
