Crossword Genius

Zulu queen clutches a religious text (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

ezra

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'religious text' is the definition.
Both the definition and answer are singular nouns.
Maybe they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'zulu queen clutches a' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'zulu' could be 'z' (phonetic alphabet: alpha, bravo, charlie etc.) and 'z' is located in the answer.
'queen' could be 'er' (abbreviation for Elizabeth Regina) and 'er' is found within the remaining letters.
'a' is present in the answer.
No letters remain.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for ezra that I've seen before include "... Pound, American poet who lived in Italy" , "religious book" , "OT prophet" , "Eponymous OT priest" , "-- Pound, US poet and critic 1885-1972" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
