Crossword Genius

Apparently not glorious but not entirely infamous (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

notorious

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'infamous' is the definition.
(I know that infamous can be written as notorious)

'apparently not glorious but not entirely' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'not' could be 'no' (negative) and 'no' is present in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for notorious that I've seen before include "Hitchcock film" , "worthy of shame?" , "having a terrible reputation?" , "Famous for bad deeds" , "Having a bad name" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
