Crossword Genius

Charge through the gate (5,3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

entry fee

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'charge through' is the definition.
I don't know anything about this answer so I cannot judge whether this works.

'gate' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'gate' could be 'entry' (I've seen this before) and 'entry' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'fee' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'the' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for entry fee that I've seen before include "Admission charge" , "Teeny ref seeking payment to get in" , "Payment often required to take part in competition" , "Price paid to gain admittance" , "Cost of starting" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
