Crossword Genius

Chopped the ham and tripe that's brought in a bowl? (12)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

amphitheatre

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'bowl?' is the definition.
(I know that amphitheatre is a type of arena)

'chopped the ham and tripe that's brought in a' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'the' could be 't' (the is pronounced as a 't' sound in some dialects) and 't' is found within the answer.
'a' could be 'amp' (A is the symbol for the amp or ampere) and 'amp' is found within the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for amphitheatre that I've seen before include "Open auditorium" , "Theatre gallery seating area" , "Classical home for drama" , "Arena; gallery tier" , "Roman tiered arena" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
