Crossword Genius

Day perhaps to see to teacher's retirement (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

doris

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'day' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'to see to teacher's retirement' is the wordplay.
'to see' becomes 'do' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'to teacher' becomes 'sir' (a male teacher might be addressed as 'sir').
'retirement' shows that the letters should be reversed in order (retire can mean to return or go back).
'sir' reversed gives 'ris'.
'do'+'ris'='DORIS'

'perhaps' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for doris that I've seen before include "In Greek myth, wife of sea-god Nereus" , "-- Day, actress" , "Woman's name" , "Female name" , "Woman" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
