Detailed sign accepting of French accent (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

cadence

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'accent' is the definition.
(thesaurus)

'detailed sign accepting of french' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'of french' could be 'de' ('of' in French) and 'de' is found within the answer.
'sign' could be 'can' (can is a kind of sign) and 'can' is found within the remaining letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for cadence that I've seen before include "Closing bars" , "Lilt" , "Modulation of the voice" , "Rhythm of the voice" , "Rise and fall" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
