Crossword Genius

Dog biting large colonist (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

settler

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'colonist' is the definition.
(I know that colonist can be written as settler)

'dog biting large' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'large' could be 'l' (eg in clothes sizes) and 'l' is found within the answer.
'dog' could be 'setter' (setter is a type of dog) and 'setter' is found within the remaining letters.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for settler that I've seen before include "One taking up residence in a new area" , "newcomer, perhaps" , "One colonising new area" , "Early colonist" , "Colonist, pioneer" .)

I've seen this clue in The Daily Express.
