Crossword Genius

Ross

I believe the answer is:

grammy

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'award' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'elegist covering very short distance' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'short distance' could be 'mm' (abbreviation for millimetre) and 'mm' is located in the answer.
'covering' could be 'gray' (gray is a kind of covering) and 'gray' is found in the remaining letters.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'gets' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for grammy that I've seen before include "National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences award" , "Award for CD" , "Record industry award" , "Annual award in the US for the music industry." , "US recording industry equivalent of an Oscar" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
