Although both the answer and definition are plural nouns, I can't understand how one could define the other.
'escape routes' is the wordplay.
'escape' becomes 'flight' (synonyms).
'routes' becomes 'paths' ('path' can be a synonym of 'route').
'flight'+'paths'='FLIGHT PATHS'
