Crossword Genius

European, rather like Dan? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

danish

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'european' is the definition.
(from Denmark)

'rather like dan?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'rather' could be 'dan' (I've seen this in another clue) and 'dan' is found within the answer.
'like' could be 'ish' (similar in meaning) and 'ish' is located in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for danish that I've seen before include "Scandinavian language" , "Copenhagen this capital" , "Flat cake - and party's his! (anag)" , "Pastry, from Copenhagen say" , "Native to Copenhagen" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
